Major search engines like Google are constantly tweaking their search algorithms to produce higher quality, more relevant search results for us when we perform a search for a particular keyword or keyword phrase. One of Google’s search innovations was creating instant search and other personalized search capabilities which examine your search habits and then use this information to modify the search results you see whenever you perform a search. This is refereed to as personalized search. For example, if you frequent a certain site and then do a search for a term related to that particular website, all things being equal, that site will appear higher in your search results than a site you haven’t yet visited. If you regularly visit CNN.com and then do a news related search, CNN.com web pages will usually be returned in your search results over other news related websites. If you had never visited any news websites in the past or you turn off personalized search features, Google would then return the best web pages matching your search keywords regardless of your previous search habits. Viewing natural search results without the bias of your own personal search habits is crucially important when determining how high your website ranks for a particular keyword or keyword phrase. Performing a keyword search for a keyword related to your website will commonly bring up your website much higher in the search results than an ordinary web searcher or a new potential client searching for the products or services you offer that has never before visited your website. This after all, is the type of individual and web traffic you’re trying to direct to your site and capture. By default, Google will personalize your search results, even if you’re not logged into your Google account. You’ll need to “unpersonalize” your search results to get an accurate picture of how your website is really ranking for the rest of the world. To do effective SEO, this is an absolute. The first taking into account your search history, habits, present geographical location, and other personalized factors. The second link, with the &pws=0 parameter added to the end of the search URL, will provide you more natural mostly unpersonalized results. Geography can still play a role in search results bias even using the &pws=0 parameter, but all other primary factors will be disabled. It’s also important to note that sometimes your personalized search results will closely match natural, unpersonalized search results, however this usually isn’t the case if you’ve already visited other websites related to your keyword search. Unfortunately, the &pws=0 parameter will not permanently stay appended to all your future search queries, so you’ll need to add it again to the end of each new query you perform. This can have unintended consequences when you publish your post. After you’ve logged into the Admin area of your WordPress site and you are ready to write a post, locate the text formatting toolbar above the area where you compose post content. To show the toolbar, make sure the “visual” tab is selected. At the right end of the tool bar you will notice a square icon with three horizontal rows of small dots. In WordPress this is called the “kitchen sink”. Clicking on this icon will cause a new row of

icons to appear underneath the main formatting toolbar. Toward the center of this new toolbar you’ll see a small icon with a yellow clipboard and the letter “W” superimposed on top.

Validation of Viewstate MAC failed

The Validation of Viewstate MAC failed error commonly occurs when an ASP.NET application developer uses the Membership, Roles and/or Profile Providers included with the .NET Framework. The usual scenario is the developer creates the application on their local machine and stores the project files in a local directory. When the developer copies or publishes the project files to another local directory or to a remote server, the login system doesn’t appear to function properly.

The solution is to manually add the applicationName attribute to the node of your web.config file and give it a value. By default ASP.NET auto generates the applicationName using your project’s root directory path if the applicationName attribute isn’t declared in your web.config. The applicationName is important because your ASP.NET Application Service database uses it in a number of tables. The applicationName is a relatively long string of characters and will look similar to: cea2acdb-97b7-4b58-ad12-22efg3bd582q.

If you move your project to any other directory either local or remote, a new applicationName string will be auto generated and added to your ASP.NET Application Service database. Any new users, roles, or profiles you create will be tied to the new applicationName. Once you move your application to a new directory, any users, roles, or profile information you created while your project resided in your previous directory will not function or throw the following error: “Validation of viewstate MAC failed. If this application is hosted by a Web Farm or cluster, ensure that configuration specifies the same validationKey and validation algorithm. Auto Generate cannot be used in a cluster.” Each time you move your project to a different directory you’ll run into this problem.

To solve this, first go to the Server Explorer in Visual Studio and open the database containing your ASP.NET Application Service database. Right click on the table named aspnet_Applications (dbo) and select “Show Table Data”. Look to see what your ApplicationName and LoweredApplicationName fields are named. It should be “/”. If it’s named anything other than “/”, rename both fields “/” as shown below.

Next open your web.config file. Add the applicationName attribute to your provider declaration(s). You should set the applicationName attribute equal to “/” to match the “/” fields in your aspnet_Applications (dbo) table. An example is provided below:

Make sure you add the applicationName attribute to all your users, roles, profile, and/or any other nodes in your web.config or you’ll run into problems. In the example above I’m using both the Role and Membership providers so I added it to both declarations.

Once you declare the applicationName attribute, ASP.NET will always use that application name when writing and connecting to your ASP.NET application service database regardless of where your application resides.
